Why I hate “My friend wants to join me” sessions

November 8, 2012

One of the things I strongly dislike…alright, hate, is when a client is asking about her friend joining. If it’s a male, I don’t mind, but if it’s a female, it makes it difficult. Why? Simple; I tend to navigate to the more dominant personality. That person is the more outgoing and spunky one. I don’t know why I am, but I just am. The other reason I hate doing two people shoots is unless it’s corny family posing, I only know how to put sauce on the poses. Meaning they need to be hot, sexy and sensual. Those are the best kinds of couples photos imho, so that’s what I shoot.

Of course when shooting sisters, you have to make sure all closeness things are non-existent, but still make sure the photo is hot or else you’ll lose the attention of the viewer…in a glamour setting. In fashion, the viewer is more focused on the product or clothing that is being sold so your focus, lighting and attention is totally different from where a shoot with Jay Kilgore would be:

Couples, couples is easy as you can change the focus and put one or the other in front as the focal point. You CAN do the same with same-sex couple shoots but again, the dominate one will be the one you end up shooting the most. As a glamour photographer, the focus is easy to put on the female in a male female shoot.

At the end of the day, know or at make a conscious decision to learn your ticks when shooting couples. Adjust so that you are paying attent

ion to both and getting the best images you possibly can!

What is the lesson? Learn your shortcomings and most importantly; DON’T FORGET TO HAVE FUN!
